As actuaries and risk professionals, we are considered custodians of the solvency and integrity of the insurance industry. As we review history, we see evidence of that responsibility in practice. Our duty is to manage a fine balance between three masters, policyholders, shareholder and employees, with at times apparent alignment and conflict. We engage on topics including risk management and mitigation, product design, discrimination, capital adequacy and sustainability. However, I would argue when we layer on the forth component, professional integrity, they are invariably aligned. In the next 30 minutes I will share with you my journey through the regulatory landscape from education to influence and beyond. You will not find any reference to textbooks or literature, what you will hear are the real life challenges and opportunities I have had the privilege to experience. This expedition will transverse the globe from AIDS modeling in Africa to Risk Management in China, with pit stops covering M&A in North America, gender discrimination in Europe and regulatory change in the Middle East. If you are looking for mathematical formulae or technical UW definitions, you won't find it here, this is a story about people, relationships and working together for the greater good.
