Analysis Of Impact On Return-to-work

Vocational rehabilitation (VR) is a process that enables disabled people to access, maintain or return to employment. The World Health Organisation (WHO) notes an increase in the need for work rehabilitation over the past decades as a result of work disability and includes an aging work force and occupational stress as reasons. In addition to the personal wellbeing of individuals, successful return to work of disabled individuals greatly reduces the disability income claims burden of South African life insurers. There has been an increasing focus by SA life insurers to actively manage disability income claims over the past two decades, one of the areas of focus is vocational rehabilitation to improve the return to work outcome of their claimants.

VR is still a scarce and often expensive resource in SA and life insurers would benefit from improved efficiency in using this resource. This research analyses the impact of claim intervention on the return-to-work outcome of claimants and aims to identify the factors indicating the likelihood of return to work for a disability income claimant at the start of the claim, which can assist in the decision of where to apply the scarce resource of VR. The group disability income claims of one of SA's largest life insures will be analysed to identify demographic and other factors linked to the RTW outcome of disability income claimants.
