The original meaning of the work “Actuary” is clerk. It comes from the Latin for account keeper, deriving from actus, “public business”. While the majority of modern day health actuaries find themselves working in the private sector, there are opportunities to apply actuarial thinking and techniques to the public sector, perhaps going back to the roots of protecting public business and in this instance, public funding for healthcare. This session will focus on a number of case studies on work done by the ILO in developing countries, including Pakistan and Ghana, and how this indirectly but ultimately contributes towards Universal Health Coverage.
