The legal position of the actuary and of the actuarial profession is different throughout Europe. A clear view on the diverging and converging aspects is not available which is what is experienced as a deficiency during exchanges with European Institutions and also needed to fully understand the concerns of the Member Associations. A survey initiated by the Task Force Roles of the Actuaries reporting to the Professionalism Committee makes an inventory of the status of the legal and the political recognition in the various markets. The survey: • Gives evidence of the composition of the membership and the conditions; • Allows to compare the legal context amongst the countries and with the European legislation on professional activities and to focus on case studies; • Gives insight in the recognition by stakeholders; • Reflects on the strategic views of the associations in Europe; The observations coming out of the survey inspire the Task Force to formulate options for the way forward for further development and on the strategic discussion amongst actuaries. The information on how legal and political recognition is realized in other markets can help members to reflect and argument their own position.
