Description:

There is a robust understanding of how specific behavioural, metabolic, and environmental risk factors increase the risk of health burden. However, there is less understanding of how these risks individually and jointly affect health-care spending. The objective of this presentation is to quantify health and health-care spending attributable to modifiable risk factors using a model developed in a project with the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation Global Burden of Disease researchers. The original research was published in The Lancet Public Health in October 2020. The session will provide actuaries with information on the GBD model, findings in US and international contexts, and applications to international health insurance product pricing and risk management.
